The Macallan Red Collection 50-Year-Old

Whisk(e)y is the overarching term for a distilled spirit from fermented grains. The amber-colored spirit can be made from corn, rye, barley, or wheat, but the exact blend — and spelling — depends on where the whisk(e)y is produced. While there are exceptions, the rule of thumb is that it’s spelled whiskey in the US and Ireland, and most other places spell it as whisky. Scotch, Irish, rye, and bourbon are all types of whisk(e)y produced with different mash bills (blended ratio of grains) and follow regulated aging periods. Irish whiskey and Scotch whisky age for a minimum of three years before release, while bourbon requires only two.

Like top-shelf vodka, top-shelf whisk(e)y is characterized by the quality of grain ingredients used and a lengthy distillation process that results in a purer spirit. However, top-shelf whisk(e)y brands also age their spirits longer than vodka does. A long aging period imparts flavors from the type of wood the whisk(e)y rests in and allows the flavors to mellow while becoming more balanced.

10 Top-Shelf Whisky Brands

The Macallan

The Macallan Red Collection 77 Years Old

The Macallan is one of the world’s leading single-malt whisky brands. In 1932, it was one of the first distilleries in Scotland to receive a legal license, although it was established in 1824. Since then, it has grown its portfolio to include a variety of premium collections defined by the unique casks in which the whiskies mature. These include the Sherry Cask and Double Cask collections. The Sherry Cask collection is its signature series; the whisky rests in European sherry oak casks from Spain for a balance of spice and fruit. For example, the 18 Year Sherry Oak Cask spends 18 years in selected casks for a full-bodied sip with a palate of dried fruit, charred oak, and baking spices. It also has a 25-year Sherry Cask label and a number of limited editions, including The Macallan Red Collection, bottled from oak casks that have matured between 40 and 78 years. The Double Cask blends are also sherry-seasoned but use a mixture of European and American oak casks, which impart different flavors.

The Dalmore

The Dalmore The Luminary No. 1

This single-malt whisky is recognizable by its emblematic 12-point Royal Stag on every bottle. The Principal collection includes nine different expressions ranging from The Dalmore 12 to The Dalmore 21, which age for 12 and 21 years, respectively. In addition to these expressions that it produces every year, The Dalmore crafts exceptional limited-edition whiskies that age for decades and come in special decanters. These include some of The Dalmore’s most exclusive and rare whiskeys like the 43-year-old Apostoles Finish, matured in American white oak ex-Bourbon casks and finished in Cask #1, a very rare González Byass 30-year-old Apostoles sherry cask. It’s part of 2023’s Cask Curation series, which included three expressions.

There’s also the ultra-exclusive Luminary series. The first, The Luminary No. 1, is a 48-year-old single malt created by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and The Dalmore’s master distiller, Richard Paterson. It matured in a series of casks, starting in American white oak ex-bourbon casks, then in Matusalem and Apostle Oloroso sherry casks and vintage Port pipes before it finished in both Scottish Tay and Japanese oak. Only three bottles were ever produced, and one was sold for just over $150,000 at a Sotheby’s auction in London. For the second edition, The Dalmore partnered with Melodie Leung, part of Zaha Hadid Architects, for a 49-year-old blend and accompanying sculpture. Again, only one was available for purchase, and it sold for nearly $120,000 at Sotheby’s, with all proceeds donated to V&A Dundee, a design museum in Scotland.

Glenmorangie

Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 1998

In Scotland’s ancient Gaelic language, Glenmorangie translates to “valley of tranquility,” a nod to the distillery’s enduring commitment to its bucolic farmland. It produces a number of entry-level premium whiskies under $200, including a Calvados Cask finish and Triple Cask reserve, but its Grand Vintage portfolio is its most impressive line. This collection focuses on long-aged whiskies, and many are explorations in different barrels and techniques. For example, Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 1997 developed its red fruit and spicy citrus flavors imbued by 13 years in Château Montrose red wine casks after already spending a decade in hand-picked bourbon casks. The 1998 Grand Vintage is fuller-bodied with rich orange chocolate flavors on the palate and a sugared almond finish that’s influenced by its prolonged resting period in Oloroso sherry casks.

The Singleton

The Singleton of Dufftown 54 Year Old

The Singleton is regarded as one of the most versatile Scotch whiskies. Its traditional line comprises 12-, 15-, and 18-year-old bottles that predominantly rest in American oak barrels previously used to age bourbon, resulting in a spirit with rich sweetness. A minority of its releases age in European sherry casks to impart a fruity layer. Its special releases stray from the traditional sweet profile with a spicier palate, like The Singleton 40 Year Old ‘Glen Ord’ Single Malt Scotch Whisky or The Singleton of Dufftown 54 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, the latter of which is the oldest and rarest whisky The Singleton has ever released.

Glenfiddich

Glenfiddich 50 Year Old

This family-owned distillery produces the world’s most-awarded single-malt Scotch whisky. It’s no wonder why, considering its full range of expressions. These range from its robust core line to a rare and vintage portfolio, which itself includes five series. Glenfiddich’s oldest and most exclusive single-malt whiskies include a 50-year-old bottle under “Time Reimagined” and a 55-year-old Janet Sheed Roberts Reserve, classified as a “Historic Release,” and one of the most expensive bottles ever sold at $94,000 when it was sold at auction in 2012.

Royal Salute

Royal Salute 21-Year-Old The Miami Polo Edition

This brand is younger than some of the others on this list, and it is also a luxury blended Scotch whisky rather than a single-malt collection, but Royal Salute is still noteworthy. The brand’s Signature Blend was born as a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II on her coronation in 1953 and has since been recognized as its classic blend. Today, a number of limited-release and archive blends contribute to the brand’s portfolio, including the 62-Gun Salute and popular 21-Year Polo editions. Each edition focuses on a different iconic polo scene, beginning with the Estancia Edition, which paid homage to Argentina, and the current Miami Polo edition. The Time Series Single Cask Finish 51 Year Scotch Whisky is one of its most expensive releases to date at $30,000, but costs far more on the secondary market.

The Balvenie

The Balvenie 25 Year Old

The Balvenie developed its core line as a way to showcase how finishing a traditionally aged whisky in unique casks can quickly change a single malt’s profile. There’s a Caribbean rum-finished whisky, as well as French oak and Portwood. The Rare Marriages range pulls a small selection from The Balvenie’s rarest casks, including current releases of 25-, 30-, and 40-year-old expressions. In 2023, The Balvenie released a commemorative 60-year single cask release to celebrate the six decades that its former Malt Master, David C. Stewart, spent at the distillery. Stewart was the longest-serving malt master in industry history.

The Glen Grant

The Glen Grant Devotion

A bounty of stunning sculptural decanters live under The Glen Grant’s rare and vintage collection. There’s the 70-year Devotion, the oldest release from The Glen Grant; The Visionary, a singular 68-year single malt created especially for the Distillers One of One Auction in 2023; and a 170th edition, crafted by master distiller Dennis Malcom from the distilleries finest vintages across the years. The 21-, 25-, and 30-year single malts are part of its core collection and, therefore, are more readily available but still premium, starting at $400.

The Glenrothes

The Glenrothes 25 Year Old

Whisky lovers adore The Glenrothes for its fruit-forward, rare-aged single malts with no frills. The distillery is classic and presents an intimate, ultra-luxury line of whisky, including the 18-, 25-, and 42-year expressions. In 2023, the brand debuted Philos, a gimbal decanter, to pour the most precious whisky at sea without spilling a drop. The project was a direct result of The Glenrothes’s popularity among luxury yachters; thus, the unique intersection of whisky, yachting, and design was born.

The Glenlivet

The Glenlivet 25 Year Old

In October 2021, a bottle of The Glenlivet 80-year-old Gordon and MacPhail whiskey sold for nearly $190,000 at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong. The Glenlivet distilled this special release spirit in 1940, making it the oldest whisky a brand has ever bottled and a prime example of the brand’s mission to create individuality in its releases. Another example is its Distillery Exclusives, which visitors can only purchase on-site; the line includes 16-, 18-, and 30-year single malts, alongside five other products.
