11 Luxury Napa Valley Winemakers to Know

Behind every bottle of wine is its creator, whose dedication to the art of winemaking has led them to this point. Here, we shed light on the most important luxury Napa Valley winemakers.

 |

Winemaking can be a thankless job. All too often, consumers recognize a wine by its label and the lore of the winery’s reputation, however, behind every faultless bottle of wine is a meticulous winemaker whose decisions helped finesse the final outcome.

The series of decisions that a winemaker undertakes can sometimes include opting to do nothing instead of turning to key interventions that are commonplace in winemaking — but that itself is a judgment call and one that the most experienced winemakers know when to make.

Winemakers help define a winery’s style over time, which can ultimately solidify a winery’s legacy. Over the years, Napa Valley has attracted young and experienced winemakers alike to join the ranks of America’s famed wine country. Young Europeans have planted roots in the Valley, starting as apprentices before evolving to associate and then lead winemakers. Born-and-raised Californians have also made their mark on their native wine region. There are approximately 500 wineries in Napa Valley, with hundreds of individuals playing behind-the-scenes roles. However, a handful of winemakers have played a crucial part in shaping the Valley and developing its world-class reputation.

Read on to discover 11 Napa Valley winemakers you should know.

11 Luxury Napa Valley Winemakers to Know

Paul Hobbs

Paul Hobbs began his career working alongside one of the most famous Napa Valley winemakers as an intern at Robert Mondavi Winery. In 1979, Mondavi handpicked Hobbs to join the inaugural winemaking team of Opus One, Mondavi’s joint venture with Bordeaux’s Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Hobbs helped lay the foundation of the winery that would become monikered as a “Californian First Growth.” After Opus One, Hobbs led the Simi Winery team in Sonoma and consulted for various estates around the world before he eventually took the first steps to create his self-titled winery in 1991, dedicated to creating single-vineyard terroir wines from California’s most fascinating vineyard sites.

Hobbs may have built a name for himself in Napa Valley, but he went on to become a global icon as the owner and vintner of seven wineries, including Viña Cobos in Mendoza, Argentina, Crocus in Cahors, France and Yacoubian-Hobbs in Vayots Dzor, Armenia. He’s earned more than ten 100-point scores across his portfolio.

Andy Erickson

Andy Erickson studied engineering and medicine before pivoting to wine in 1994. He spent his first harvest at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars before completing an enology program at UC Davis while working with Spottswoode and Saintsbury wineries. After graduation, he spent a decade winemaking for some of the biggest names in Napa, including Dalla Valle, Screaming Eagle, Bond, Staglin, and Mayacamas, before starting his own brand in 2003, Favia, with his wife Annie Favia, and a year later, Leviathan. Favia is a farm-first venture, producing the likes of ageable Sauvignon Blanc and Coombsville Cabernet, while Leviathan remains focused on Cabernet-based blends that “are free from the constraints of appellations,” as the wine is crafted from grapes sourced from multiple sites throughout Northern California. Erickson continues to act as a consulting winemaker for Dalla Valle, Arietta, Dancing Hares Vineyard, and Ovid.

Philippe Melka

In 1991, Philippe Melka was an intern at Chateau Petrus in his native Bordeaux when proprietor Moueix sent Melka to study soils at his Napa Valley project, Dominus. After his stint in Napa, Melka worked in France, Italy, and Australia before briefly returning to Bordeaux and then ultimately moving back to Napa. He began at Clos du Val while developing Melka Consulting with his wife, Cherie, and in 1996, they created their own label, Melka Wines. Today, Melka continues to consult under the rebranded Atelier Melka with clients, such as Skipstone, Merryvale, and Nine Sons, all while continuing to grow Melka Wines with four brands: Métisse and CJ from Napa Valley, Mekerra from Sonoma Valley, and Majestique from sites around the world.

Julien Fayard

Originally from Provence, Julien Fayard began his career at the renowned Lafite Rothschild and Smith Haut Lafitte before relocating to Napa Valley in 2006. He spent eight years working as Philippe Melka’s director of winemaking, then decided to launch his own label, Fayard Wines, and establish his own consulting firm, Fayard Winemaking. He’s received 100 points for his Sleeping Lady Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and has made a name for himself with his California-terroir-driven wines that are finessed by his French training. Fayard consults for over a dozen wineries in the Valley, including Beau Vigne, Covert Estate, Somnium, and Patel.

Celia Welch

Celia Welch’s winemaking career spans three decades (and counting), with her wine studies dating back four decades. Welch started her career at Robert Pepi in 1991, began consulting for Staglin Family Vineyard in 1992, and branched off to become an independent wine consultant in 1995. It didn’t take long for Welch to emerge as a pioneer; in 1999, Women for WineSense awarded her the Hall of Fame Award. In 2004, she founded her own brand Corra Wines, and in 2008, Food & Wine magazine named her Winemaker of the Year. Currently, Welch is a consulting winemaker for Signorello Estate, The Hess Collection, J. Davies Winery, and Scarecrow Wine, the latter of which she received 100 points for the 2019 Vintage Scarecrow (one of the many 100 points she’s earned throughout her career).

Heidi Peterson Barrett

Heidi Peterson Barrett holds the title of “First Lady of Wine” for a region — Barrett grew up in a winemaking family and became the winemaker at Buehler Vineyards at age 25. She went on to become winemaker at Dalle Valle where she received 100 points in 1992 and 1993 for the “Maya” Cabernet blend, and between 1992 and 2006, she was responsible for the success of Screaming Eagle, where she earned 100 points for the 1992 and 1997 vintages. Barrett established her own label in 1994, La Sirena, and the current portfolio includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Moscato, Rosato, Chardonnay, Syrah, and red blends. She also co-owns and operates Barrett & Barrett Wines with her husband, Bo Barrett, and co-leads their wine consulting firm with past and present clients, including Amuse Bouche, Fantesca, Kenzo Estate, and Revana to name a few.

Thomas Rivers Brown

Born and raised in South Carolina, the unlikely success that Thomas Rivers Brown found in Napa Valley has been told time and time again. Brown has 35 100-point Cabernet Sauvignon wines and oversees 40 winemaking projects in Napa and Sonoma, including Schrader Cellars, Far Niente, Round Pond Estate, Maybach Family Vineyards, and Revana Family Vineyard. Not to mention, he operates his family winery, Rivers-Marie, with his wife. Its single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay wines have garnered a lengthy waiting list. Over the years, Brown’s been a vocal advocate for organic wine growing and viticulture.

Jesse Katz

Jesse Katz’s resume is full of achievements. In 2010, at the age of 24, he became the youngest-hired head winemaker in the US at Lancaster Estate. He quickly garnered attention from wine media and later became the first winemaker on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list; he then attained a spot on the Wine Enthusiast 40 Under 40 Tastemaker list. Katz earned these titles because of his unique approach to wine, steeped in the creativity and art of winemaking.

Though he holds a global record of consulting clients, he’s made the biggest name for himself with his own labels, Aperture and Devil Proof Vineyards. Aperture focuses on producing cool-climate Californian Bordeaux varieties, and Devil Proof Vineyards prioritizes dry-farmed Malbec. Both labels have received various 100 points from wine media, including Aperture’s 2020 Del Rio Cabernet Sauvignon (the only wine from the 2020 vintage to receive 100 points) and Devil Proof’s 2021 Farrow Ranch.

Ashley Hepworth

Ashley Hepworth spent her early career in the restaurant industry before her Napa Valley foray as a harvest intern at Joseph Phelps in 1999. Post-harvest, Hepworth stayed on as a cellar worker and remained dedicated to Joseph Phelps. She held positions as a lab technician and enologist before being named associate winemaker in 2004. The company promoted Hepworth to head winemaker in 2008, and she held in this role until 2023 when she left to launch Ashley Hepworth Wine Consulting. During her 15-year tenure at Joseph Phelps, Hepworth championed the winery’s signature and award-winning red blend, Insignia

Allison Tauziet

Allison Tauziet’s first harvest at Domaine Chandon inspired her viticulture studies at UC Davis. After graduation, she took her degrees in fermentation science and French overseas to Bordeaux and taught wine classes to English-speaking visitors. When Tauziet moved back to Napa Valley, she joined Far Niente Winery as an enologist and worked as an assistant winemaker for them for five years. In 2005, Tauziet began her enduring residence at Colgin Cellars, working her way from assistant winemaker to winemaker and finally director of winemaking, in 2018, a position she still holds today. Under Tauziet’s direction, Colgin Cellars has earned a number of 100 points; among them, the IX Estate 2018 red wine received 100 points from renowned critic James Suckling.

Benoit Touquette

Even though Benoit Touquette grew up surrounded by wine in Lyon, France, he didn’t pursue a career in wine until later in life. He moved to Napa Valley to harness this desire, where a three-month internship with Andy Erickson turned into a full-time, multiyear position working with his most prestigious clients, including Dalla Valle, Ovid, and Screaming Eagle. In 2007, Touquette began his own consulting firm, and in 2012, he became a partner at the lauded Realm Cellars. All the while, Touquette was building his own brand, Fait-Main Wines, a collection of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the sites he believes are Napa’s best. With multiple 100-point wines for both labels, he’s one of the most decorated Napa Valley winemakers with an ever-growing portfolio that to date accounts for more than 30 100-point wines.
