In aviation, the term Mach describes an aircraft’s speed relative to the speed of sound. This means that if a private jet flies at Mach 0.85, it’s going 85% the speed of sound. Mach is not to be confused with knots (kn); a knot is one nautical mile per hour, a unit of speed used for planes and yachts. A knot is a fixed unit, whereas Mach is a ratio that changes depending on conditions such as altitude and temperature. Mach 0.85 is equivalent to a different number of knots at 35,000 feet compared with sea level, for instance. 

Private jets typically cruise at speeds between 400 and 600 knots (approximately Mach 0.70–0.85), depending on the type of aircraft. Small private jets, for instance, fly at cruising speeds of 380–450 knots (Mach 0.70–0.76), whereas heavy long-range private jets fly between 500 and 600 knots (Mach 0.85–0.95). Weather also affects the speed at which private jets fly; for example, storms require slower airspeeds to ensure passenger safety. 

Are Private Jets Faster Than Commercial?

Some private jets are faster than commercial airliners, but this isn’t always the case. Light jets, for example, are usually slower than commercial jets. Even so, the time you’ll save from not waiting in lines for boarding, taxiing, or claiming baggage can make flying by private jet faster. Midsize and larger jets are almost always faster than commercial jets, in terms of both cruise speed and overall travel time.
